Four Factors Against the Spread Redux

Prior to the start of the 2012-13 college hoops season, I wanted to see if there was a relationship between KenPom’s Four Factors (eFG%, TO%, Reb%, FTR) and a team’s record against the spread (ATS).  I made a few observations and wrote about them in this post.

Recently, I found the Covers.com ATS archive.  I thought it would be interesting to expand the number of seasons and mash-up the Covers.com ATS data with KenPom’s Four Factors data.

I gathered up four years of data from 2010-11 to 2013-14 and created this excel spreadsheet - Four Factors ATS.

As I make my way through the data and potentially continue to expand the number of seasons, I’ll tweet out observations as we build towards the 2014-2015 season.

If you make any interesting observations in the data, tweet me @themulv. Maybe there is a system for picking games in there somewhere.

Alford Era Begins With a Win But Program Still Lacks Excitement

The Steve Alford era officially began at UCLA in front of a sparse crowd at Pauley Pavilion, as the Bruins kicked off their regular season against Drexel last night. Alford’s team held off the Dragons, 72-67, in a game that was not decided until the final minute of play. While the new coach was extremely positive about his team’s performance and ability to dig out a tough win, there still seems to be lack of urgency and excitement around the UCLA program. On the opening night of college basketball at a program with the history and tradition of UCLA, there should be electricity in the air. Unfortunately, that was not the case at all. READ MORE

For some teams, the Championship Fortnight (as Kyle Whelliston would call it) begins this week. For most others, this is the final week of the regular season. Many teams sit squarely on the bubble and need to impress in their final two contests to show they deserve to be in the Tourney. We’ve waited all year for March. It’s finally here and all indications tell us it’s going to be a wild month. Let’s get to the breakdowns! READ MORE

Bubble watching has officially begun, which means March is just around the corner. With less than a month to go in the season, everything is still up for grabs in what has been a truly unpredictable season in college hoops. The Big Ten and Big East lead a solid slate of games this weekend. With epic snow hitting the east coast, it looks like most people will have to sit at home and watch hoops. Sounds great to most of us, I’d assume. Let’s get to the breakdowns! READ MORE
